Solar Pizza

This article reports of an Australian student who figured out a way to produce solar cells in, of all places, a pizza oven. Trying to find a way for places with low-cost facilities to develop solar technology, she stumbled upon a method of developing solar energy in the oven, thereby discovering an unusual way for poorer countries to possess alternate energy sources. Whether or not this will have an effect on pizza, or if our environment will be redolent of wood-fired pizza has yet to be determined.

Funny Environmental TV

With the Olympics on all weekend, you’re probably going to be busy watching sports in front of the tube. However, during those long stretches of commericals, here’s a way to take an amusing break while waiting to see who wins the gold.

The Daily Green has a list of their ten funniest green moments in TV history; they include such priceless skits as a hilarious Ali G interview and the “Greenzo” episode of 30 Rock. It’s a pretty good list, but the global warming episode of South Park is noticeably absent (though they did include Manbearpig). Is there anything you think is sorely missing from the list?

Soy Milk: Greener Than Real Milk, Still Not That Green

An article by The Green Lantern at Slate points out that while the carbon footprint left by producing milk is greater than the one produced in making soy milk, it's not by that much. Though soy milk isn't produced by cows, the genetic engineering that goes into making soybeans isn't anything to brag about.

Clearly the only solution to this problem is to stop drinking milk, thereby reducing many kinds of pollution. By eliminating milk altogether, we don't need to waste so much energy on cows, soybeans, cars for transporting milk, and making people taller. Height pollution is just as much of a problem as the others.

Organic Fast Food

In trends we’d like to see continued, a recent news announcement of the opening of O!Burger—an all-organic fast food chain opening in Los Angeles—proposes that fast food doesn’t need to be unhealthy. The burgers are made entirely from grass-fed cows, and the menu includes such health-conscious items as bananas and even live culture yogurt Now how about a drive-thru lane for bicycles?

Back to the Eco-Future

A misconception of going green is that we would be sacrificing technological awesomeness for the sake of the environment. Lies!

A post on WebUrbanist highlights seven ideas that would make the Earth a better place. All of these look incredible and really futuristic, or, to be blunt, they’re bad ass. Check out the eco-island, which is an actual ISLAND that benefits the environment through its mere existence! It looks cooler than the island from Lost.

While many of these ideas are outrageously expensive and would require years of planning and construction, it’s a good sign that we’re beginning to think of helping the Earth on a large scale. And it’s an even better sign that they’re going to look like something from Blade Runner.

No Fake Plastic Trees!

First, by releasing their album In Rainbows online in a name-your-own-price campaign, Radiohead changed the way that music is released in the face of digital piracy. Now, the British quintet has shifted their focus from music distribution to the environmental hazards involved in touring.

Realizing how costly a full-scale tour is to the environment, Radiohead have decided to use the findings done by Best Foot Forward for their 2003 tour and put them to good use. On a new blog, they detail how—through a variety of methods—they plan on making their upcoming tour more environmentally friendly. In one recent post, they even describe a way to have truck drivers use power from the venue to air-condition their trucks!

All of this sounds terrific, just so long as they include “Everything in Its Right Place” in the set list.
