Reuseable Kitchen Trash

It’s kitchen week here at MTV Switch! Well, not exactly—but after yesterday’s post on the energy saving of convection toaster ovens, we’re here with another entry on how you can do some recycling when it comes to your food.

Here’s an article offering six resourceful ways to reuse waste products from your kitchen, and many of the suggestions are really good ones. The best one, however, is the last: Recycling the ends of your wine bottles. That’s not referring to the bottle itself, but to the dregs of the wine, which can be frozen in ice cube trays and used later on--as a sauce or reduction--for cooking.

Green Cooking: Toaster Ovens!

Any way you look at it, your kitchen uses up an enormous amount of energy. From refrigerators to gas ovens to stoves, all major appliances that require the storage or preparation of hot and cold foods need energy sources. Ideally, we’ll find ways around this pickle by using alternate sources of energy; but for now, the only thing we can do is stick to what we have and make the best of it.

Surprisingly, or maybe not, when it comes to cooking food, convection toaster ovens are one of the more environmentally friendly options available. They use about 20% less electricity and reduce cooking times by about 30%. Take a look at this article to see a couple options for sleek toaster ovens for your kitchen, and keep in mind that they can be cheaper, too.

Funny Environmental TV

With the Olympics on all weekend, you’re probably going to be busy watching sports in front of the tube. However, during those long stretches of commericals, here’s a way to take an amusing break while waiting to see who wins the gold.

The Daily Green has a list of their ten funniest green moments in TV history; they include such priceless skits as a hilarious Ali G interview and the “Greenzo” episode of 30 Rock. It’s a pretty good list, but the global warming episode of South Park is noticeably absent (though they did include Manbearpig). Is there anything you think is sorely missing from the list?

Trashy Style

Terracycle is an American company that pays you for your trash and then turns it into either stylish or everyday products--such as tote bags, school supplies, and home cleaning bottles. What’s most interesting about the company is that the recycled trash that you buy actually bears resemblance to the trash. For instance, a bag made out of Capri Sun juice bags carries the containers as its design. Surprisingly, the products look pretty cool! Though they can’t pass for designer bags, there is something fun and punky to them, making an easy solution a fun fashion accessory.

DIY Solar Cooking

Once you have a garden that grows fresh produce, the next logical step is to prepare and cook your crops. While there are solar-powered grills and stoves on the market—and ones that are affordable—there are always methods to make the process cheaper, more portable, and environmentally friendly.

On Ecofriend, one reader of the site sent in an image of a solar cooker that he designed himself . Similar to a tanning mirror that people take to the beach, it’s foldable and modular, so that you can place it in relation to the sun’s position. The coolest part is that it’s made by you, which means that everything, from the cooking to the cooker, is your creation.

Foldable Green Motorcycles

As evidenced by the iPod, PSP, and Mini Cooper, people wish their items to be smaller and more portable. In the future, it is likely that we will see many everyday devices and gadgets becoming tinier than we can imagine; this goes for environmental products as well.

This apparatus hasn’t been created yet, but its design has won awards that indicate that it's in the works. It’s a motorcycle that you can fold up and carry with you as a suitcase. The bike is powered by an electric motor, which in turn gets its charge from solar panels on the outside of the body. Also, the appearance is very sleek, which means you get the look and feel of James Bond.

Futuristic Garden Art

One problem with creating your own garden—and one which is as environmentally conscious as possible—is that it often looks pretty ugly. Taking care to decorate a garden with such items as garden gnomes and birdbaths often achieves the reverse effect: your yard looks worse than it did before.

The Dutch design group studioTX offers a twofold solution to gardening problems. The first is with regards to decoration; as displayed on Treehugger, they’ve crafted a helium-filled bag with a neat design on the front—one that pokes fun at tacky garden dolls while also making their own model appear hip. The second achievement is as an environmental tool: The bag is biodegradable and lined with seeds. Given four to six weeks, the seeds inside spring forth into the garden and create a flower patch. So now, gnomes no longer just sit on your lawn—they actually grow the plants for you.
