Eco-Chic Starter Furniture

zen.bmpNo matter how small your shoe box of a first apartment may be, it still can look empty without furniture. Making the space yours on a tight budget can be accomplished with green furniture. There are a number of cheap, stylish, and comfortable options.

You can always check Craigslist or ask friends for unused furniture. There are great pieces available for free or close to free, which can be recovered or refinished as desired. Plus, reusing furniture is definitely one of the greenest options. If you can’t quite find what you want or need on the barter market, it's time to expand your search.

IKEA – Known for its modern look and good deals, IKEA is a great place for affordable furniture and they have a number of green options, such as their TRABY line.

Cardboard Design – That's right , you can get cheap, sturdy furniture that is completely made out of recycled cardboard. It’s attractive too.

Bamboo Hardwoods – Bamboo is a great renewable material that is used to create inexpensive furniture with lots of personality. You can even get a bamboo mini-bar.

You can also find furniture at thrift stores, goodwill, salvation army and if you have some more disposable income antique stores. The cheapest alternative is to go to www.freecycle.org and find your local chapter and you can get stuff for FREE!
